Our May Meeting: Rocks from Space with Fred McPherson “Mick the Meteorite Man”
Fred McPherson is a meteorite dealer from the Chatham area. Fred has searched for meteorites, in places like Arizona, California and Nevada. He does tend to favour local rocks; meteorites found in Chatham, Grimsby, St. Thomas and the Toronto area.
Fred’s passion for began when he was a five year old ‘rockhound’. The passion for meteorites started after he saw a TV program which intrigued him. Fred contacted the people he saw on TV and asked if he could tag along. Much to his surprise they answered; ‘sure no problem we’ll take you along”
Here are some of the things that Fred will discuss:
- How to identify meteorites and where to find them.
- What does a meteorite look like?
- Where’s the best place to look for a meteorite?
- Can Meteorites be dangerous?
- What should I do if I find one?
- Who owns the meteorite?
- Can I sell a meteorite for a lot of money?
Our May get together sounds like a great meeting. Fred will have about 200 samples on hand for you to look at; and you might even want purchase one or two if you so choose.
