TotBlocks: Using 3D-Printing to Visualise Modular Minerals

April 6th Meeting – In Person & Online Starting at 8:00pm

TotBlocks are a series of 3D-printed modules that can be used to construct the crystal structures of minerals such as micas, amphiboles, and pyroxenes. In this presentation, Derek will talk about the conceptualization of TotBlocks, the behind-the-scenes design of TotBlocks, and highlight some of their key features.

Our presenter Derek divides his time between collecting some rocks (mineralogy) and throwing others (curling). He is a long-time member of the GMCS and has been the Membership Director since 2012. While obtaining his BSc at Laurentian University (Sudbury), Derek described a new mineral species—windmountainite—for fun. Combining his experiences in competitive curling on the international stage, Derek had the opportunity to investigate the rock physics of curling stones for his MScR at the University of Edinburgh (UK). He is currently pursuing a PhD at Laurentian University conducting research on green micas (e.g., fuchsite, mariposite, and roscoelite) associated with gold deposits. In his spare time, Derek works on eclectic projects related to 3D printing, pop-up books, and writing.

For anyone wishing to attend in person these are the rules we will be
observing.
Masks must be worn at all times. Please bring your own, but we will try to have extras available if needed

There will be a short screening form that will need to be filled out at the door prior to entry. This is for contact tracing only. All forms will be destroyed after a few weeks.

There will be no food served during the meeting and we ask that you please NOT bring any food or drinks in with you.

For anyone who can’t attend in person, the meeting will be streamed live over Zoom. A link was e-mailed to GMCS members along with this month’s strata data newsletter.

We are continuing these policies to ensure that those in attendance feel comfortable and safe. Let’s face it, most of our membership are not exactly young and resilient and I do not want anyone to be in a situation where they do not feel safe. We will assess the situation on a month-to-month basis and hopefully, before too long, we can lose the masks and have a nice snack and coffee prior to the presentation.
