January 4th at Knox United Church Meeting Hall
Because we still DO NOT have a Program Director*, our Newsletter Editor, David Bellamy has stepped up to kick off the New Year with a presentation about Easter Island (Rapa Nui). Strange timing to be sure. David will be discussing the geology of the island and how it was formed. He will also discuss theories of the island’s colonization by its original inhabitants and how they were treated after contact with Europeans, and its current status as a special territory of Chile. He will also discuss the famous statues, known as moai, how they are believed to have been created and theories as to how they were moved to their final destinations.
We will also be collecting membership dues for 2023 with rates being $20 for a single or $25 for a family membership.
*what the Program Director does:
- Provide members with informative sessions at meetings that are both educational and recreational in all aspects of the hobby.
- Survey the membership from time to time to update the information as to what members want information on.
- Maintain a record of speakers we have had and topics they have knowledge of for the purpose of having them back.
- Check with members to get a reaction on the guest speaker of the night.
- Publicise upcoming events and speakers at regular meetings, on the web and in the Strata Data.
- Arrange with the Treasurer to have a cheque prepared with approved stipend for the guest speaker. -Ensure all required equipment and resources are available for each speaker ahead of time.
- Introduce and thank speaker on behalf of the club.
- Review annually the stipend given to speakers.
See, it really ISN’T a huge commitment of time and effort to keep the club functioning normally. Anyone wishing to fill the position can make their intentions known to President at gmcspres@scarbgemclub.ca
