February Meeting – Volcanos live and online

February 5th Volcanos by Nigel E. Turner, Ph.D.

As a part of his job, Nigel gets to travel, a lot, and has visited many volcanos around the world as a tourist. Nigel will present a series of photographs from his travels and will display some rocks from his collection related to volcanos. The warmer location of many (but not all) of those photographs seems appropriate for a talk in February.

Nigel E. Turner, Ph.D. (not in geology), is a life long enthusiastic of collector of rocks, minerals, and fossils. Dr. Turner is a scientist at the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has spent the past 29 years conducting research on problem gambling.

As a 5 year old, Nigel used to joke that he had put various rocks in places around the country (My rock). He used to pester his parents to stop on the side of the road at rock cuts, so he could collect rocks. He still has many of those rocks collected as a child. Turner considered a career as a geologist but was discouraged when he found out how many years it would take to get a doctorate and how much math he would have to learn. So in one of life’s little ironies, he became a research psychologist, spent 12 years in university, and now has a focus on statistical analysis. He is particularly well known for computersimulations to understand the odds of gambling games (and he is very fond of factorials).
