November 1st Meeting – What is a meteorite? Mar’s edition

In-person and on line November 1st 8-10 PM

On November 01st, Megan Swing will be giving a talk on meteorites from Mars and answering some of the big questions like “What is a meteorite?”; “How do we know these rocks are from Mars?”; “Why are these samples important?”; and “What can meteorites tell us about Mars’ composition and history?”. The talk will be an overview of how we obtain meteorites, how they are classified, and how they are studied. She will conclude the talk by discussing some of the research being conducted at the museum and the specific work she does.

Speaker’s Bio

Megan Swing is a Ph.D. candidate in Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto and the Royal Ontario Museum. Working under the supervision of curator Dr. Kim Tait, she has the unique opportunity to study Martian meteorites at the microscopic and nanoscopic scales using exclusive, high-resolution analytical techniques. While geology has been a passion of hers for many years, the chance to study extraterrestrial rocks and share that knowledge with keen minds has brought new excitement to her work.
